Misprinted Type

MisprintedMy sister Pam [works in a shop, she never stops, she’s a go-getter... oh, sorry], who runs a popular blog on crafting, turned me on recently to some very cool freeware typefaces called Misprinted Type. They’re very reminiscent of some of the sloppier old T-26 fonts (particularly the five commercial fonts offered for sale), but less fanciful and far more usable.

They’re designed by a Brazilian artist by the name of Eduardo Recife, crafted with Macromedia Fontographer and available in TrueType format for both Mac and PC (Windows TrueType fonts work perfectly well in Mac OS X incidentally). And they’re free!

My favorites are Nasty, Porcelain and Selfish, but they’re all pretty great and cover a fairly wide variety of styles (script, gothic, typewriter, etc.). Check them out here.

New Market Street Railway Poster

1060At some point during my work with Market Street Railway, I started creating little vector representations of the F-line streetcars which I would use for various purposes throughout Market Street Railway's collateral. For instance, when Muni acquired eleven new PCC streetcars from Newark NJ, the vector illustrations were a perfect way to present the paint schemes that each of the new streetcars would be wearing upon arrival in San Francisco (liveries representing cities like Minneapolis, Detroit, San Diego, etc.).

Eventually, I had created an illustration for each active car in the fleet. Market Street Railway president Rick Laubscher then asked me to design an information panel for the San Francisco Railway Museum which would show all of the streetcars of the F-line fleet, along with the year they were built and the cities that they represented. And upon installation at the museum, this panel became an instant hit among museum patrons, many of whom asked if they could buy a poster of that panel to take home with them.

As of this week, the answer to that question is "yes".

Our initial run of these F-line fleet posters went to press on Friday at Western Lithographics, our wonderful printer, and should be available for purchase at the San Francisco Railway Museum and through the Market Street Railway online store by the end of this week, just in time for Christmas. The posters are 22x28 inches for easy pre-built framing (the same size as the posters in Market Street Railway's Vintage Travel Series).
